Identify the geographic location and network characteristics of your users.
EdgeScape is Akamai’s IP intelligence service. It enables e-businesses to drive targeted business strategies online. Customers can get access to EdgeScape data in two ways:
-
Standalone EdgeScape
With this product, you can access EdgeScape data by running Akamai's EdgeScape Facilitator within your infrastructure. The Facilitator handles DB auto-updates, includes an API interface, and allows your origin to quickly lookup geolocation, network, and security information from connected client IPs. Standalone EdgeScape comes in three “flavors”:-
EdgeScape Standard - limited attributes, single application
-
EdgeScape Pro - all attributes, single application
-
EdgeScape Pro Enterprise - all attributes, multiple applications
-
-
On the Edge
This method is known as content targeting. This allows you to apply business and geolocation rules to specific end users by using a subset of information to run logic at the Edge. You can also forward that information to the origin using an HTTP header.
Benefits
-
Apply regional download policies to specific countries.
-
Provide different types of user experiences dynamically based on a user's geolocation (ie. provide a localized version of a website for people in a given country like www.example.es for people in Spain or www.example.fr for people in France).
-
Provide different types of user experiences dynamically based on the user's network connection (ie. cellular/non-cellular, low/high bandwidth, etc.).
-
Pre-populate online forms with information relevant to users (ie. a list of phone area codes, ZIP codes, city, state, etc.) based on the IP geolocation of the user.

The entire IP address space is represented in the database and always has a country code associated with it. All other elements in the database, including region code, are optional and may not necessarily be associated with an IP address. In addition, for AOL IP addresses, only country information will be returned.
However, if the IP address is in the reserved IP space (as designated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), every attribute has a value of “reserved”.
